Oklahoman Route 66 Receive New Neon Signage

2025-08-20

Businesses along Route 66 in Oklahoma are lighting up with new or refurbished neon signs ahead of the historic roadway’s centennial in 2026, The Oklahoman reports.

Many Oklahoman businesses and establishments along Route 66 have tapped into a grant program for preserving vintage neon signs and adding more vintage-inspired signage to the roadway, according to Rhys Martin and Julie Akers, president and executive director of the Oklahoma Route 66 Association as quoted by The Oklahoman. Many have received grants from the Oklahoma organization, while others have obtained grants elsewhere.

Grady’s 66 Pub in Yukon, the Miami Public Library, the Oklahoma Route 66 Association headquarters and the Church Studio in Tulsa are among buildings that have recently installed or plan to install neon signage under the grant program. In addition, the Threatt Station Monument east of Luther, OK — a historic fuel station that served Black travelers who were refused service at other establishments along Route 66 — is the eighth monument installed for the nationwide Route 66 Centennial Monument Project.
