In August 2017, Adidas Originals in Toronto’s trendy Queen Street West neighbourhood re-opened its doors following a significant renovation project. The location was the brand’s first ‘neighbourhood concept’ store to open in Canada—a boutique with a design containing distinct elements reminiscent of the area it is located in.

Total Signs used midway bulbs to achieve the desired starburst lighting effect.

The company recruited Total Sign Service (Total Signs), based in Holland Landing, Ont., to build a feature illuminated sign of the brand’s logo. The 0.9- x 1.2-m (3- x 4-ft) installation would be utilized in the store’s new VIP clothing lounge, located on the building’s second floor.

The trefoil logo was fabricated from 100 per cent aluminum. The backer shapes were cut with a computer numerical control (CNC) router, while the sides were hand-bent by the fabricator. The installation’s socket covers were hand-cut to hold the bulb assemblies and conceal the wiring. Once wired, the entire structure was coated with glossy blue paint.

To achieve the desired starburst lighting effect, Total Signs opted for midway bulbs, which are typically used for carnival rides and similar attractions. The specialty bulb covers were fitted with custom-designed light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to ensure the indoor application was both safe and energy-efficient.

For installation, the crew worked with a contractor who was able to run electrical behind the drywall and into the back of the sign, allowing for a wireless and seamless install.
